Trammel gauges

What is a Trammel Gauge?

A trammel gage is a device used to measure holes and other difficult to reach features. (deep slots, deep face grooves, small holes deep holes, undercuts diametral undercuts on OD and ID, various grooves). They can be used for general measuring, replacing the micrometer for inside or outside feature. They are sometimes refered to as groove calipers, groove gauges, groove micrometers because of their convenience for measuring groove depth and groove width.

Vancouver Wire EDM developed its first dial trammel gauge for internal use: we had been unable to find groove measurement instrumentation to check some features on a milling job, so we adapted a dial gauge we had at hand. The resulting gauge allowed us to effect precision measurement on a part with difficult features. Our gauges allow +-.001” and lower, based on the precision of the indicator.

Gauges are made of case hardened steel and connect to a Fowler dial gauge. Trammel body holds indicator, part that slides holds a ruby stylus, set up w/ gage blocks and outside micrometer. Usage is simple: technician establishes nominal dimensions using a micrometer or set of gage blocks, measures deviation from nominal using trammel mounted dial gage .

This one: large range for the amount of precision (range: .200” to 18” with .0001” precision, allowing measurements within .001”). Two separate bodies: 0.200" to 3” for body 1, 1.5” to 18”. Depending on dial test indicator used, will allow measurement to a depth of up to 1.5” into a small hole while still measuring accurately.

Convenient, lightweight, precision instrument. Allows measurement in small hard to reach features that more cumbersome instruments cannot reach. Light, so you can feel contact of point, hands positioned very close to styli, allowing technician to get a good feel of the measurement.

Contact points, styli available in different lengths and shapes, including: disc point, disc stylus (styli), ruby tipped, carbide tipped, extended. Standard Dial Trammel Gauge is sent out with ruby tipped point. Shipped with case, indicator, trammel gage, extra ruby points, instruction CD.
